Or how I learned to ignore well-meaning medical advice

and save my esophagus.

So what's this page doing on a website devoted to an author's books? Well, I'll tell you. In my bio I mentioned a medical scare that motivated me to leave my past life and to become a full-time writer. If you wondered what that was, this page is for you.

"A Throaty Tale," is about a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus with hi-grade dysplasia (cancer in situ), a prescription for an esophagectomy, and how I avoided the surgery and kept my esophagus. It's all revealed in an article I published at the time in the national magazine: "The World & I."

This could be important reading for anyone diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus, and it also has helpful lessons for negotiating the perils of our medical system regardless of diagnosis.
