Can You Imagine Being a Pioneer?

The Cover of the Book: The Bark Covered House

Here's another book recommendation. It's a true memoir of an early 18th Century pioneer, William Nowlin, who moved with his family from the relative civilization of New York State to the undeveloped and dangerous wilderness of Southeastern Michigan. Why did they do it? They were farmers and the soil in Michigan was much more productive and workable than the New York farmland. However, first the family had to clear their selected homestead of hundreds of trees, build a home (bark covered, of course), forge good relationships with local Indians, begin to plant crops, and build a new life.

Considering the rudimentary level of Mr. Nowlin's education, the book is extremely well written, interesting and captivating. If you have always wondered, as I have, what it was really like (not the Hollywood version) to pioneer the midwest, this book is a gem. I loved it and think you will too.
